Kids Help Make Playgrounds Safe and Positive
Every day all across America, over 33 million elementary-school students in over 52,000 public schools stream onto their school playgrounds. Recess! That important time of day when students can give their minds a break and their bodies an opportunity to do what young, growing bodies are meant to do: run, jump climb, swing and play.
Many adults assume recess is a safe, fun time for all students. But the facts belie this assumption.
- Each year 200,000 children visit an emergency room hospital as a result of a playground injury.
- Every seven minutes a child is bullied at school.
- Children themselves report that the playground is the most common area where students are bullied.
Play by the Rules, a lively new program designed for students five- to 12-years-old introduces students to the 3Bs:
- Be Responsible
- Be Safe
- Be Respectful
Using lots of examples of students explaining and putting the 3B principles into practice, Play by the Rules covers:
- What it means to be responsible, safe and respectful
- How students can handle common playground problems
- When students need to ask for adults’ help
- How to use playground equipment appropriately
Play By the Rules was developed in conjunction with Systematic Supervision: Creating Safe and Positive Playgrounds, a staff development program funded with a research and development grant from the National Institute of Mental Health. These research-based programs provide students and staff with easy-to-follow guidelines that can make the playground experience safe and enjoyable. Play By the Rules can be used with students to jumpstart discussions about appropriate playground behavior and to teach existing school rules. (The 3Bs are general principles that fit with any school’s existing rules.) Students will also enjoy watching this fun, upbeat program on their own.
